POST OF VICE CHANCELLOR
FOR THE CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY OF MALAWI (CUNIMA)
The Episcopal Conference of Malawi, an assembly of the Catholic Bishops of Malawi, proprietors of the Catholic University of Malawi, is inviting applications from suitably qualified, experienced, focused, well-motivated, visionary and distinguished academic and administrative professionals to be considered for the position of Vice Chancellor of CUNIMA which will fall vacant soon.
About the University
The Catholic University is a private University recognized, registered and accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE).
The University currently offers Thirty-three academic programmes spread in the Faculties of Education, Social Science, Commerce, Science, Social Science, Theology, and Law.
The Office of the Vice Chancellor
The Vice Chancellor is the Chief Executive and Academic head of the University overseeing the day to day running and administration of the university in a manner that makes the university dynamic, vibrant and competitive.
Major Duties and Responsibilities
Managerial Leadership and Administration
On behalf of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi:

- Providing sound and innovative executive leadership to the University geared at the furtherance of the objectives of the University;
- Providing leadership and line-managing key executive leadership of the University’s constituent colleges and satellite centres ensuring that they manage their duties efficiently and effectively in a comparative environment;
- Spearheading strategic planning, policy formulation and implementation targeted at the development of the University, and be responsive to the needs of Malawi in particular and the World in general;
- Overseeing the geographical and academic portfolio expansion of the university;
- Ensuring that mechanisms for quality control and inspection are in place and are functioning properly
- Regularly updating and getting guidance from the Chancellor, the Episcopal Conference of Malawi, and the University Council on key matters affecting the University and its core functions;
- Promoting, safeguarding and maintaining the values, image and reputation of the University at all times;
- Promoting and ensuring high standards of organizational and individual discipline amongst staff and students in line with Catholic Ethos and values;
- Promoting and championing visibility of the university through interaction with key stakeholders and community engagement;
- Chairing Senate and Management Meetings;
- Conferring University degrees, diplomas and certificates on behalf of and in the absence of the Chancellor, the Pro-Chancellor and the Council Chairman;
- Devising and supporting initiatives towards mobilising resources and funds;
- Ensuring that funds raised by the University and those provided by other shareholders are managed properly;
- Ensuring adherence to administrative and financial policies, standards, rules and regulations;
- Preparing and submitting reports from time to time to the Episcopal Conference of Malawi
Academic Leadership

- Stimulating a culture of excellence in providing quality and holistic education;
- Inspiring academic staff in providing effective teaching and learning through an effective appraisal and staff development system;
- Ensuring that timely and effective mechanisms and framework for the review and development of curricula are available
- Ensuring that alternative and diverse modes of teaching and learning are explored and implemented
- Ensuring the promotion and execution of the University’s research agenda
Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
This is a highly demanding position that requires a candidate with outstanding and demonstratable academic and administrative qualifications, skills and attributes to manage and propel a private Church-owned university.
Specifically, the candidate:

- Must be conversant with and able to promote the principles underpinning Catholic education and ethos;
- Must have a PhD from an accredited and internationally recognised University and preferably must be a Professor or Associate Professor with a credible track record in research, teaching and management;
- Must be a proven leader with academic and managerial standing at a Higher Education Institution or any other relevant institution;
- Must possess a proven track record of academic, managerial and ethical excellence to be able to command the respect of and interaction with the academia and stakeholders;
- Must possess a clear vision of how to develop further the academic portfolio and brand of the University;
- Must be familiar with the current national, regional and global policies and trends shaping and influencing higher education;
- Must have personal integrity with regard to developing healthy interactions with students, staff and stakeholders and with regard to the custody, management and usage of university funds;
- Must demonstrate interpersonal, people management, team building and effective communication skills;
- Must possess proven ICT and innovative skills
Terms and Conditions of Service
The successful candidate shall be on a contract for a period of four years and eligible for reappointment for one further term of office based on satisfactory performance in line with the University’s comprehensive Terms and Conditions of Service.
The candidate shall be offered a salary package and benefits commensurate with seniority of the position and qualifications and in line with the salary structure and budgetary provisions of the university.
