As the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, UNDRR brings governments, partners and communities together to reduce disaster risk and losses to ensure a safer, more sustainable future. UNDRR (formerly UNISDR) is the United Nations focal point for disaster risk reduction. UNDRR oversees the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030, supporting countries in its implementation, monitoring and sharing what works in reducing existing risk and preventing the creation of new risk. Duties and responsibilities:

  • Participate in the Table Top Exercise (TTX) in Malawi, take notes of the discussions and role play.
  • Develop agenda items and LoP for the training on disaster loss data in Mozambique and TTX in Malawi.
  • Organize regular meetings with project partners and take minutes of those meetings
  • Desk research on the current disaster loss data ecosystem in Mauritius, reviewing MTR submitted report.
  • Desk research on the current disaster loss data ecosystem in Seychelles, reviewing MTR submitted report.
  • Desk research on the current disaster loss data ecosystem in Madagascar, reviewing MTR submitted report.
  • Support the development of a regional workshop in Mozambique and present findings of the literature review on Early Warning Systems
  • Support the work on standard methodologies that foster the use of different disaster datasets in support of damage and loss databases to facilitate reporting under the Sendai Framework Monitoring
  • Review substantive reports sent by grantees on loss damage training in Mozambique and TTX

Qualifications/special skills

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in social science, public administration, disaster risk reduction, risk management, environmental sciences, urban planning, sustainability, sustainability transitions, geopolitics, economics, finance, or other relevant discipline is required.
  • A first-level university degree combined with an additional two years of qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of an advanced university degree.
  • At least two years of proven professional experience in the areas of Disaster Risk Reduction, Urban Planning, public governance, economic development, general administration or combination thereof is required.
  • Prior experience in engaging governments / stakeholders and facilitating multistakeholder consultations (in-person and virtual) and relationship management in Africa is desirable. Expertise in research / review and analysis, and the preparation and production of reports is desirable.

Languages

Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Other languages spoken in the Africa region is desirable.
