LANGUAGE & CROSS CULTURE FACILITATOR at Peace Corps Zambia December, 2018

Peace Corps Zambia wishes to invite applications from suitably qualified persons to fill the position Language and Cross Culture Facilitators for Mambwe, Kaonde and Tumbuka Languages, these are fixed short term contracts over a two year period( Base + 2 options) March – May 2019; August – November 2019 and March – May 2020.

Location : Chipembi or Chongwe
Daily Rate : On/around ZMW 613.00/Day
Estimated Days : 90 days/contract period with a maximum of four periods
Work week : Full-Time; 6 days/week

BASIC FUNCTION

The short-term Language and Cross-Culture Facilitator (LCF) will prepare all relevant facilitation and learning materials in addition to facilitating language and culture sessions, and provide an oral report to the Language Coordinator after each language session on each Trainee’s performance; integrate technical vocabulary and culture into language sessions; and conduct language assessments, simulations and Language Proficiency Interviews (LPI).

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES will include but not limited to the following:

• Facilitate language learning in Zambian languages to Peace Corps Trainees
• Participate in designing and producing language materials to enhance the language training program in Peace Corps Zambia
• Participate in pre-training Language Training of Trainers and General Training of Trainers as required
• Administer the Language Profile Interview (LPI) to assess trainees’ progress in learning language
• Participate in providing feedback for the Trainee Assessment Profiles throughout Pre-Service Training
• Assist Trainees at all times during the training and check their well-being in the village
• Act as a cultural model
• Help identify potential homestays
• Conduct homestay visitations
• Write reports about Trainees language successes and challenges
• Engage Trainees in local language conversations at all times
• Act as a cultural information resource
• Liaise with all coordinators and host parents concerning Trainees’ welfare
• Provide support to new colleagues on lesson preparation and delivery
• Integrate technical, safety & security, gender, HIV/AIDS, diversity and cross culture vocabulary into language lessons
• Keep staff meeting discussions regarding Trainees’ progress confidential
• Be committed to training related work
• Accompany Trainees during practical language activities/ site visits
• Monitor Trainees progress and provide timely, objective and constructive feedback
• Assist in the inventory and packing of all Community Based Training (CBT) materials

OTHER DUTIES

• Facilitate language and culture to Trainees outside structured sessions whenever need arises
• Other duties as assigned

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Assists the Training Manager in developing, assessing and redesigning competencies and training sessions as required. Evaluates and reports Volunteer/Trainee acquisition of safety and security competencies. Immediately communicates Volunteer safety and security concerns and issues to the Safety and Security Manager (SSM) and Training Manager. Supports the safety and security systems that are in-place for pre-service training, including reinforcing Trainee roles and responsibilities related to personal safety and security. Knowledgeable and supportive of Peace Corps safety and security policies and procedures, including the timely reporting of suspicious incidents, persons or articles.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

In order to be selected for this position, the applicant must be a Zambian Citizen, must not have been employed in intelligence-related activities, and must submit an application that clearly documents how they meet each of the fol-lowing mandatory requirements; please specify preference of languages.

• Possession of a 2 years Certificate, or 2 years Diploma or 4 years Degree in Teaching or 4 years Degree in Adult Education is required.
• Three years of professional experience in teaching is required; Experience teaching English language or Zam-bian Languages/ Linguistics is desired; Adult Education experience and/or experience teaching Zambian lan-guages to non-native adult speakers is desired.
• Good working knowledge and fluency in English is required; must be a fluent speaker in any of the following languages: Mambwe, Nyanja and Tumbuka.
• Excellent knowledge of grammar, idiom, syntax, and pronunciation of the host country language is required. Must have sound knowledge of the Zambian culture. Knowledge of language training methodologies and facil-itation skills is desired
• Able to ride a bicycle in a rural set up
• Willing to work and live as a community based- trainer in rural environments
• Computer literacy in Microsoft word, Excel and Power point
• Certified by Peace Corps to administer and score Language Profile Interviews (LPI) is desired.
