First Quantum Minerals Ltd. is an established and growing mining and metals company currently operating four mines and developing projects worldwide. Our aim is to become a globally diversified mining and metals company.

With a strategic plan to produce more than 1 million tonnes per annum of copper within five years, the Company is poised to become the largest, widely-held pure-play copper producer and one of the top five copper producers in the world.

We currently produce copper cathode, copper in concentrate, nickel, gold and sulphuric acid.

First Quantum’s current operations are the Kansanshi copper-gold mine in Zambia, the Guelb Moghrein copper-gold mine in Mauritania, the Kevitsa nickel-copper-PGE mine in Finland and the Ravensthorpe nickel-cobalt mine in Australia.

When our current projects are in operation, we expect we will be able to triple our annual copper production capacity and be positioned within the world’s 10 largest copper producers.

Sentinel is the first mine to be developed at the Trident project in the North Western Province of Zambia. The project comprises five large-scale mining licences and significant geological potential exists for expansion of operations, including the Enterprise nickel mine announced in December 2012. First Quantum is investing US$1.725-billion at the Sentinel mine and construction remains on time and on budget. Plant commissioning will commence in mid-2014 and copper production is expected reach 280 – 300,000 tonnes per annum.

Key Responsibilities

Human Resource Business Partnership:

  • Consult with management providing HR guidance when appropriate.
  • Analyze trends and metrics in partnership with HR Management to develop solutions, programs and policies.
  • Manage and resolve complex employee relations issues. Conducts effective, thorough and objective investigations.
  • Maintain in-depth knowledge of legal requirements related to day-to-day management of employees, reducing legal risks and ensuring regulatory compliance. Partner with legal department as needed/required.
  • Work closely with management and employees to improve work relationships, build morale, increase productivity and retention.
  •  Provide HR Policy guidance and interpretation.
  • Assist international employees with related HR matters and cultural requirements.
  • Provide guidance and input on business unit restructures, workforce planning, and succession planning.
  • Advocate and practice a safe and organized work environment.
  •  Support efforts to maintain Company culture.

Human Resource Administration:

  • Prepare, maintain and audit data for regular and temporary employees.
  • Sustain an equitable plan for salary and benefit compensation to attract and retain talent in the organization.
  • Prepare and analyze system management reports.
  • Resolve or refer to HR Operations, employee payroll and benefit questions and issues.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, employment laws and effective employment practices.
  • Review and recommend policies and procedures in compliance with employment laws.
  • Ensure regulatory reporting, compliance, and record retention.
  • Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and systems.  Recommend new approaches, policies and procedures to affect improved department deliverables.
  • Champion continual process improvement.

Selection and Hiring:

  • Support and track the requisition and job description process.
  • Provide insight and information to HR Management to assist them to design employment recruiting initiatives that attract the best talent with desirable experience and culture fit.
  • Pre-qualify top quality candidates for presentation to hiring manager.
  • Coach hiring managers on business and behavioral interviewing skills.
  • Deliver flawless on-boarding processes.
  • Facilitate new employee orientation and safety programs.

Performance Management:

  • Champion a performance-driven process where expectations and key measurements improve organizational talent to achieve business plans.
  • Coach Managers on communication of employee expectations and evaluation of deliverables.
  • Support efforts to document and change poor performance in compliance with employment laws and progressive discipline practices.
  • Implement best practices to retain key talent.
  • Support leaders’ efforts to identify tomorrow’s best leaders today.

Project Management:

  • Implement agreed upon project, using and optimizing the resources necessary to successfully meet established goals within cost, schedule, and quality objectives.
  • Identify project management implementation and execution gaps or areas for improvement, recommend and implement solutions.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Requires a bachelor’s degree in a job-related major and 3 to 5 years of related experience; or a combination of education and experience.
  • A solid understanding and knowledge of employment laws, employee relations, compensation practices, organizational diagnosis, diversity programs, payroll, benefits and practical application is required.
  • ZIHRM certification is a must.
  • Relevant industry experience and HRIS system knowledge is a plus.
  • Experience in effective communication (oral and written) and facilitation skills required.  Ability to influence employees and managers in cross-functional teams focusing on accountability and execution of organizational objectives.
