Job Description

SNV seeks a Deputy Chief of Party (DCOP) for an anticipated 5-year USAID-funded Zambia Alternatives to Charcoal project.  The position is contingent upon grant award. The purpose of this activity is to reduce deforestation and forest degradation in biodiverse significant areas by promoting alternatives to charcoal. The Deputy Chief of Party will support the Chief of Party (COP), serve as the secondary liaison with USAID, and provide overall day-to-day management and coordination of project technical and administrative personnel and functions, including ensuring that appropriate technical and financial reporting requirements are met. S/he should have experience awarding, managing, and monitoring sub-awards and ensuring compliance with appropriate regulations. S/he should have appropriate levels of complementary expertise, professional and work experience to support the COP and ensure coherent and effective program coordination and operations. The Deputy Chief of Party must possess the relevant management, communication, and interpersonal skills to fulfill this role.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or higher in environmental science, natural resources management, international development, master’s of business administration, or related field of study.
  • Minimum 8 years’ experience implementing donor projects, preferably in the areas related to: natural resource management, climate change adaptation/resilience, renewable energy, sustainable forest management, and/or other areas related to sustainable livelihoods, conservation agriculture or biodiversity conservation.
  • Direct relevant experience managing a large, multi-year program; previous U.S. Government project management experience is desirable.
  • Ability to interact regularly and professionally with senior host-government counterparts on policy and other strategic planning issues.
  • Proven ability to develop systems for project and program design.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead people and get results through others.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and strong track record in meeting deliverables and deadlines.
  • Problem analysis and problem resolution at a functional and strategic level.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Past experience working in Zambia is highly desirable – local candidates are strongly encouraged to apply.
