Job Title: CEO Zambia
Reports to: Group Chief Operating Officer
Location: Lusaka, Zambia

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of a reputable company in Zambia is looking for a Local Executive Role for the Group. The role reports into the Group Chief Operating Officer and is accountable to the local Board. The CEO is responsible for leading a high performing leadership team to deliver the company’s performance towards achieving its overall strategy, growth and profitability agenda.


The CEO position requires the right skills and mindset to engage within a matrix structure with Group resources. Likewise to assess and mitigate principal risks and compliance of the company’s business and, together with its growth and profitability, ensures that appropriate systems (management and technology) are in place for delivering the expected services and performance standards.

As such, the position will be responsible for the following:

  • Implementation and achievement of the company’s current and future strategic direction set by the Group Board and Group Executive team, ensuring delivery of strategic and operational key results and outcomes across the organization.
  • Being conversant with the operations of the institution, risks that the institution is exposed to, the state of internal controls, legal, regulatory and industry practice requirements of the institution, as well as current issues and policies affecting the financial sector
  • Providing the mandate and leadership for the in-country management team to work in partnership across their operational groups, to lead and implement continuous improvements in business processes, leveraging digital transformation, and ensuring delivery of customer centric services
  • Identifying and developing new business opportunities.
  • Maintaining valuable relationships with public and private sector stakeholders to ensure the company’s continuous expansion and business growth.

Specific duties:

Strategic Leadership

In collaboration with the Group resources, contribute to the development of the Strategy and Work Plan to ensure the company’s profitable growth and success

  1. Through forward thinking, actively lead and influence the implementation and achievement of the current and future strategic and operational plans. And, wherever possible, leveraging technological solutions
  2. Able to place the business within the context of sectorial as well as macro-economic trends, that may influence the formulation or modification of strategy.
  3. Evidence courage and ensure integrity in the provision of consistently robust advice to the Executive team and the Board and others as necessary
  4. Ensure that the Management team builds a culture of internal excellence at all levels and influence through their positive leadership behaviors.
  5. Ensure that the Management team consistently demonstrates a collective focus on achievement of the company’s becoming Zambia’s financial service provider of choice in providing innovative financial solutions to our identified customer segment.
  6. Ensuring that management team’s qualifications, experience, competence and skills set aligns to the requirements of Financial Sector regulation and governance requirements and that their conduct and performance evidences an excellent understanding of the local financial sector regulation.
  7. Ensures that, in their execution of their roles, the company and staff are compliant with internal policies, Codes of Conduct and financial sector fiduciary and other responsibilities prescribed by law/ regulation.

Country Leadership and People Management

Provides credible, courageous and agile leadership to the Zambia management team, ensuring that they actively participate, contribute to the strategic thinking and development of the company, and demonstrate integrity, respect, moral ethics, sound judgment, and positive leadership, in all of their duties and interactions both internally and externally.

  1. Provides timely, clear, strategic and other insights to the Executive team on the market.
  2. Drives a culture of robust performance management and excellence in execution of roles and responsibilities.
  3. Drive a high performance culture, ensuring the growth and development of talent in the business.
  4. Ensures that competent leadership and operational systems are in place to drive, manage and achieve change and development efficiently across the business, ensuring that the local leadership are apprised and are prepared for with key strategic shifts or developments within the business to enable sound management of teams during change or rapid growth.
  5. Establishes and maintains an organization structure that supports business growth, with clear definitions of role and responsibilities for all team members for ensuring smooth management of agile teaming, communication and relations at all levels of the organization
  6. Ensures that among the management team there is a sound understanding and practical application of delegation of responsibility within the framework of the organization structure, Group and Local Corporate Governance Frameworks and established delegated authorities aligned to the Group and Local Risk Framework.

Financial Management

  1. Oversee the financial performance and management of the business to ensure that such performance is within the Group and Local Board Risk appetite and tolerance levels and conforms to regulatory requirements of liquidity and capital reserves.
  2. Drives financial performance of the business to ensure the achievement of the company’s financial targets approved to achieve KPIs.
  3. Operating Leverage metrics that focus on increasing return on investment and to firm value generation and increasing cash flows
  4. Vigilant maintenance of the financial position of the company’s to ensure that there is an appropriate balance of long-term and short-term finance, and provision of adequate cash flow for day-to-day operations and compliance with all applicable regulatory, licensing and reporting requirements
  5. Leads preparation of the local budget for approval by the COO and Executive Team and provide quarterly and annual financials to the COO and the company’s Board.
  6. Provides monthly budget and variance reports with mitigation strategies for variances.
  7. Variable over fixed costs and trends to reduce fixed – mindset that role is to generate concrete and optimized value and capital creation

Business Development and Customer Centricity

Defends and grows the company’s market share in the Digital Financial Services sector in Zambia, ensuring strategic competitiveness to achieve desired shareholder returns.

  1. Identifies market opportunities – either in Government or through partnerships – to enable growth of innovative digital financial products and services meet the needs of customers.
  2. Collaborate with Digital teams to develop, deploy, pilot and launch products and services to meet customer needs.
  3. Foster a climate of customer focus and set the tone for gathering insights to priorities with the customer experience and product development teams.
  4. Understand the business customer service standards and ensure the leadership, dissemination for good customer-centric services delivery for the company’s support.

Audit, Risk Management and Compliance

  1. Collaborates with the Group Risk team for establishment of a solid, fit for purpose Risk, Governance Compliance and Internal Audit Team to comply with business legal, licensing and regulatory requirements as well as applicable governance frameworks.
  2. Drives a robust risk management and compliance culture at the company.
  3. Ensure that the local risk management team has the right skills, mind-sets, and processes are in place to continuously identify, mitigate and review principal risks of the company.
  4. Identify and review strategic and operational risks, ensuring that appropriate risk mitigation strategies are in place to action and minimize actual or potential impact
  5. Ensure that operational areas have updated risk management policies, processes, risk register and business continuity plans in place aligned to the Group Risk Management Framework.
  6. Ensure accurate reporting to the Executive Team and the company’s Board of Immediately Reportable Risk Incidents as defined.
  7. Ensure that identified areas in the business are well contained in terms of risk exposure; that the Risk and Audit functions of the company’s operate independently of the business with regular independent reporting to the Executive and Board Risk committee

Corporate Governance

  1. Maintain and uphold the Group and Local Corporate Governance policies and frameworks.
  2.  Ensure there are effective processes in place that promote and advocate transparency, accountability and responsibility and sets the standards that fulfill the fiduciary “duty of care”.
  3. Ensure that the calendar and administration of meetings of the company’s Board and Meetings of the company’s leadership team are maintained and recorded in compliance with Company Law and Best Practice Corporate Governance.
  4. Ensure that the Board is provided, in a timely manner, with all information necessary to permit the Board to fulfill its statutory and other obligations
  5. Works closely with the Zambian Board Chairman in order to ensure that the focus of Board Meetings is on the right issues, information is available in a timely and effective manner and the best advice and counsel are drawn from Board members during meetings and as required throughout
  6. Timely, accurate and regular reporting to the all required stakeholders and the regulator
  7. Maintain a professional standard in all communications and services to stakeholders

People Management

Ensure that the People function of the company is effectively managed in terms of selection and appointment, reward and recognition, performance management and talent management in line with the company’s people lifecycle

  1. Understand and implement leadership responsibilities and accountabilities across the company.
  2. Ensure health, safety and wellness initiatives are supported and that relevant policies are understood, followed and implemented by all employees

Stakeholder Engagement

  1. Maintains strong stakeholder relationships with the Regulator, Government, DFS Sector players and ensures that the company is strongly represented in the right business forums and events – all towards creating an enabling environment for the business to operate.
  2. With the support of the Regulatory and Marketing Teams, become the spokesperson of the company and representative in any consultations.


  1. Degree or Post Graduate Qualification in Banking related discipline, Finance and Management
  2. Over 10 – 15 years of work experience in Banking or Finance industry inclusive of 5 – 7 years in Senior Executive Management position in a commercial Bank or Financial Institution
  3. Financial Management Experience
  4. Strong Credit Risk Management and Lending background and experience
  5. Strong Communication and People Management, interpersonal and influencing skills to build strong business relationships, foster stakeholder engagement, create new partnerships and drive culture of collaboration and innovation
  6. Exceptional leadership and management skills with a focus on securing strategic partnerships, business planning, people and financial management
  7. Must comply with rules prescribed by the Bank of Zambia on criteria relating to (i) probity, personal integrity and reputation (ii) competency and capability (iii) financial integrity
